St. Vincent de Paul In Action

A note from Kelli McGee, Managing Consultant

In August when I was roaming around my alma mater, DePaul University, I saw a quotation hanging on the wall.  Vincent said: "God asks first for your heart, then your work."  If you want to see the heart part in action, spend a day in any Depaul International subsidiary, and of course, we invite you to Ukraine.

At Depaul Ukraine, we have identified an obvious need.  Kids and adults alike have been abandoned by their familial support systems, and the social support system is not filling the gap. Depaul Ukraine--including staff, volunteers, the Vincentian family, and collaborating agencies--are trying to step up and do the best we can.  And we make it our business to identify weak spots in this social safety net.  Employees and volunteers of the organization embrace this sense of purpose.  St. Vincent de Paul has lain the foundation for this work and continues to help us articulate what we do and why we do it.

And that is how I approach my work in the charity. We have identified a need in society, and we have the big heart-ed folks in place to address it.  So, then: enabling others to do the work, use their talents, contribute, direct their passion, practice their faith, practice what they're studying in the university, and execute on this sense of purpose... in short, the work part.

We invite you to do the work with us.  As an ex-rat racer (at least temporarily!) from Chicago, I recognize that most people seek this sense of belonging, utility, higher purpose, contribution.  Sure, every day at work people contribute to society: serving food, educating kids, building machines, developing technology, flying planes, treating the sick, inspiring those around them...  And beyond that daily work, I know we're all more complex than that.  We're unique, multi-talented, skilled, generous, and interconnected.  And our abilities increase when we are needed or asked to focus our efforts.  So, come on, then. Here.  There.  Wherever you are!

From our Chairwoman, Olga...

I DID IT! I escaped from Alcatraz on August 27th & became the first Ukrainian in history who has ever swum across cold waters and strong extreme currents of San Francisco bay & did escape from Alcatraz swim :-)

I've accomplished my 1.4 mile swim in 45 minutes, which put me into top 10% of the female swimmers who have ever done the crossing.

I did it to support the projects of Depaul Ukraine, a groundbreaking charity working with street children, homeless young people and adults in Ukraine.

The swim was very hard not only because of cold water at +15C, distance- 1.4 mile and the wind, but mainly because of the extreme strong and unpredictable currents and tides of San Francisco bay. I swam half of the distance fighting the current, that was extremely difficult & challenging.

But my effort is nothing comparing with the challenge that life puts to the thousand homeless people Depaul is helping to everyday.

It is still not late to support me & donate money to Depaul to help street children and young people. Will you make a difference in somebody's life? Will you support me to let Depaul support them???

Scott McKenzie & Our Olga

Still Writing for V. Novak, Deputy Director, Kelli McGee

On August 18, Scott McKenzie passed away.  Who was he?  What did he do? He was a musician and composer.  He wrote that catchy, tropical Beach Boys ballad, "Kokomo," but he also became famous for his hit performance of the song, "San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair)."  When I read the news of his death, it occurred to me how poetic it is that Olga has chosen this location for her swim, as San Francisco is a classic forum for voicing and acting on social issues.  From anti-war campaigns and environmental protests to rights for women, minorities, gays, lesbians, and the working class, this land breeds new ideas, and is a platform for redefining equality and justice.

As Ukrainians march in parades around the world this Friday, 24 August 2012, celebrating 21 years of independence from the Soviet Union, Olga will be marching to San Francisco.  Olga's swim from Alcatraz to shore next week is symbolic of many historic struggles, and her effort marks a shift in Ukraine, as well. Today, in fact, representatives from charities and social welfare agencies in Kharkov will meet at a round table to share thoughts and discuss strategies for addressing things like homelessness.  Even recent political news shows that laws are beginning to change; the government is looking at its most vulnerable and looking for solutions.

McKenzie's voice echos...

"All across the nation, such a strange vibration...People in motion...There’s a whole generation, with a new explanation..."

One For All...

Writing for Director Novak while he's on vacation:  Kelli McGee

Olga, our board chair, swimmer, and fundraiser, is taking on a challenge not so unlike those of our clients.

She put a goal before herself: swim three kilometers in open water.
We put a goal before our clients: independent life.

Photo: Huge thanks to Andy & Carina Calitz who helped to reach 50% milestone!!!! :-)
Good beginning of the day! ;-)

www.justgiving.com/Olga-Swims-AlcatrazShe started two years ago, with no ability to swim, and as an adult learning to swim, no doubt afraid.  Our clients come to us to begin a journey, many of them have received little support from their parents, or have indeed been traumatized by their childhood or youth.  They are afraid, too.

Olga step-by-step has studied, practiced, worked, and grown into a fast, confident, capable swimmer.  She swims everywhere she goes to become stronger, faster, better.  Our clients, too, they study with our social workers, psychologists, and volunteers.  They practice new behaviors that will serve them throughout their lives.  They work on turning themselves into kind, capable, confident young men and women.  Depaul wants them to become better and stronger, so they will move onto independent life.

Olga will be the first Ukrainian woman to accomplish this swim from Alcatraz to mainland San Francisco.  Our clients are trailblazers, too.  Their families are not always good role models; they must reach for goals, when it must feel they're just chasing rainbows.

They all can succeed.  They all need support.

Olga Swims Alcatraz:  Just Give.

Mission (im)Possible...for both Olga and Sasha

I swim for him to have a future!

Sasha was born in July 1991. When he was 3 years old, his parents were deprived of their rights to him, and he was sent to an orphanage, where he grew up. He later discovered that his mother died, and he didn't know anything about his father. Sasha was often running away from the orphanage and lived in the street. He first came to the Depaulka (evening minibus project that feeds homeless youth) project in 2008. He was coming to Depaulka from time to time for food and visited the Day Center to take shower, wash his clothes, and just be around people.

At some point he disappeared and we had no news from him... then we found Sasha in spring 2012, in the hospital suffering with third degree burns. He tried to light a fire in the street to warm up, he slipped and fell into the burning fire.  But the worst thing was that he didn't ask for help immediately, he stayed in the manhole where he lived until the pain became unbearable...Sasha had seven skin grafts. Depaul supported him in the hospital, bought medication, brought food and fruit, and most importantly, just visited him. The healing has been a long process, as Sasha's body was very weak and heavily intoxicated.

Sasha is recovering now, slowly, but he's getting better every day. He stays at the Depaul Day Center, as he has nowhere else to go and is at high risk for infection. After Sasha recovers, he plans to go back to his studies, and Depaul will continue to give him the support he needs on the road to a positive independent life.  He is already on this path.  He is an active volunteer on another Depaul project that provides soup to adult street people.  His innate leadership and communication skills have been a welcomed, heart-warming surprise and example for all Depaul staff and volunteers.  We value the gifts and lessons he brings to us, as well.

Don't stand aside! Support my swim so young people like Sasha have a chance to live and have a future.

Taking on challenges

Writing for Director Novak who is on vacation:  Manager KJ McGee

Clients come to Depaul because they have met insurmountable challenges in life.  We all meet great challenges, but some of us are better equipped to deal with them than others.  And still others are fortunate to be able to give, support, work with, and help those less fortunate.  The Chairwoman of the Board of Trustees of Depaul Ukraine has put forth for herself a challenge.  While she hopes to raise awareness of the organization's needs, she is doing much more than that.  For me, she's demonstrating that we can start from nothing, set goals, learn new skills, work hard, grow in character, and be successful.  Watching her grow in her training and commitment has itself been an inspiration for me to work harder.  We hope others--you and our clients--will see the difficulty and opportunity that lay in these challenges. Here is what she has to say about her upcoming challenge:

Hi everyone,
photo.JPG     My name is Olga Tseyukova and I am Ukrainian. Some of you may know that couple of years ago I was blessed to meet Depaul Ukraine--a groundbreaking charity working to support homeless children and young people. When I learned that there are more then 300,000 homeless people in Ukraine and learnt what Depaul is dong to tackle the problem of homelessness in Ukraine, I told myself that I can't stay away--I want to make a change in those people's lives as I believe that everybody has right to a place to call home and everybody deserves to be loved. So, I became a Trustee of Depaul Ukraine.
But that wasn't enough. I want to do more--and here I am taking a personal challenge to Escape from Alcatraz later this month. Just for the record- I learnt to swim two years ago--I've never swum in open water before, and the Alcatraz swim is a huge challenge.  It's 2.5 km in cold, choppy water, with heavy tides and currents, and with some sharks, as the rumor say. But I will work hard to achieve it and I need your support for that. Every dollar you give to Depaul will go to support homeless people in Ukraine. Together we will make a difference.
Please come with me on this journey towards Alcatraz and help hundreds of people together.
                                                                                              Olga

Roll on!

Writing for Director Novak who is on vacation:  Managing Consultant KJ McGee

Depaul Ukraine supporters come in all shapes, sizes, and skill sets.  Last week a team of bus experts from Dnepropetrovsk kindly devoted a week of their time to replacing and improving parts on our Meals on Wheels chariot (only charging us for the parts).  Each of us sends a big thank you to these boys!

Thanks to them, the vehicle by which Depaul Ukraine meets, greets, and feeds rough sleepers in Odessa is back in action!  Five days a week, more than 60 clients, three Depaul Ukraine employees, and at least as many volunteers depend on this bus. Depaul Ukraine continues to help the homeless feel supported, respected, heard...and our staff and volunteers also help clients reconnect with family, and address medical concerns, among other things.

18 July 2012

Onward!

Dear friends and everyone who participated in this trip, which benefited homeless people in five countries;

The bike trip is over; everyone made it home safe and sound.  The purpose of the Leap of Faith trip, as we mentioned at the beginning, was to bring awareness to homelessness and to the problems of the homeless in our societies and to raise money so that together we can change their destiny for the better.

When I look at and analyze the results, I understand that we reached our goal.  Many people donated and many people became aware of our work and many others were supporting our efforts, morally, spiritually, and virtually, following us along the way.

I remember one person who came to realize what the needs of homeless people are.  Previously, she only knew about homeless animals, and she helped them.  But after the bike trip, she realized how people are suffering on the street, and she now is committed to helping them.
Sincerely, I thank those who supported us financially.  I thank those who visited our blog and websites and supported our charity work.  I hope in the future we can depend on your support for the homeless.

In my thoughts, I revisit the events of those weeks.  And again and again, I am very touched by the sensitivity of foreign people to our problems.  They are willing to help disadvantaged people, no matter what country they live in.  And I have not lost faith that in our country, we have as many caring people who will offer their contribution to charity. We welcome your support in Kharkiv and Odessa, and in the future, Kiev. You can do this in different ways, through your counsel, your experience, your particular part in volunteer projects, by collecting clothes and food for the homeless, and through financial donations. I am very grateful for every expression of compassion on your part!

While this is the end of the motorbike tour, I am very happy that I do not say goodbye to you on this blog.  Instead invite you to participate in the following event in support of Depaul Ukraine: our board chair Olga Tseyukova has decided to participate in an unusual event. She is preparing to raise awareness and funds for street children and homeless people in Ukraine by swimming from the island of Alcatraz to the US mainland in San Francisco. In the past, it was a prison from which no one managed to escape through the rapid currents, the presence of sharks, and the low water temperature.  And our Olga decided to do everything to overcome these barriers in favor of street children in Ukraine.  She learned to swim only two years ago!  Also note an important fact: Olga will be the first Ukrainian to make this swim between Alcatraz and the US mainland!  Therefore, I sincerely invite you to follow this event and support Olga through the dissemination of information, comments on her blog, and transfer of funds, and this will be your way to share her passion!

Go Olga!

On the Home Stretch....

The ride is in its final stages.  Loralee is on her way to reaching her goal of $200,000...she has   raised already more than $56,000.  We know this ride has already touched many: clients, spectators, employees, the riders, and our friends and family.  People are learning who Depaul is and how far the organization will go to fulfill its mission.

While I have been away, the Depaul Ukraine team and clients have been working hard in Kharkov and Odessa.  As you saw with my t-shirt, our clients have dreams.  In Kharkov, employees and clients alike, began writing theirs down: 100 Dreams they each have for themselves.  Beyond the motorcycle journey around Ireland and UK, we are now beginning to see more clearly the road ahead of us in Ukraine, where our organization is growing.  Our clients have dreams and it is our duty to provide them with the skills and tools they will need to fulfill them.  We begin by helping them with the challenges they face today.

I write now from Ukraine, as I needed to return to fulfill my clerical duties, but the group rides on.  They are now in the final segments of the journey, and this is the time when we ask people to think of our projects.  Look at Depaul's success.  Consider how this work can impact Ukraine, where such an organization is so needed.  Be part of our efforts.  Be part of our success.

Day 5: Belfast

Today we rode along the northern coast of Ireland, visiting many historical and beautiful places.  Thank you, Kathy, for sharing your photographs!

Finally in heavy rain we arrived in Belfast. Everything is wet, even my passport, but I like it so much, riding the bike!

15 June 2012

Day 4: Derry

With Zhenia and Loralee in Dublin
First about riding: I like so much seeing Ireland from the bike, seeing everything from Dublin to Northern Ireland. As usual here there is rain and a little bit of sun. Today we visited Derry, and tomorrow we are off to Belfast.

About the projects we visit: I like so much the respect and honor for every client! Then staff and volunteers know exactly what they are doing, and the client is the core of every action.  Yesterday I was happy to see in Dublin Zhenia, a project volunteer from Kharkiv. She is so good and understands perfectly what Depaul does.

So, for me, and for Depaul Ukraine, I hope, this motorbike tour is a learning experience which I hope will help those we serve!

Day 3: Trying to keep warm

I am still fine!  I am riding a Harley, by chance, but am enjoying it!  My greetings to everybody!

Off and running!

All is well, except my luggage did not arrive in Dublin when I did.  Thankfully it arrived late last night.  Today we began our ride in Dublin, at Sundial House.   Check out Loralee's blog for more details of our first day!

Sundial House.

The Nitty Gritty

So, now you want to know the details... Look at Loralee's website and see our plan!

I'm happy to introduce you to Loralee... she is the organizer.  I'm just a part of this group.  Our dreams come together on this ride.  She wants to serve the poor, as do I, each with our passion.

Everybody has a dream

Everybody has a dream.
From my childhood, I had a passion for motorbikes.  When I heard the noise, my blood pressure would rise.  I joined a motocross club when I was 10 years old. And through the history of my life, this passion didn't leave me, not even after my ordination.  I was thinking, and many others were thinking, This doesn't work, a priest and a motorbike.  But I dreamed of having a bike.  My Polish friends, when they saw my passion and my wish to have a bike, they donated, and I got the bike.  And in time, I started the organization in Depaul Ukraine, serving the homeless, the "poorest of the poor."  And again, it was again a dream, how a lot of things came together.  How could I fulfill this passion to serve the poorest of the poor.  It came when I was coming back from Poland, having been on a pilgrimage, 30,000 riders strong.  And it was after this ride that I met Loralee.  It was then that we had the idea to take this leap of faith.  Loralee said, "We will use this passion, we will use bikes..."

Our dream was to organize this leap of faith, to bring awareness and fundraising.  In this way, we want to fulfill the dreams of the poorest of the poor, whom we serve in different parts of the world, in the projects of Depaul.

So this is the history. Why am I enjoying it?  Because dreams come true. And we hope that dreams come true for the people we serve, as well.
